I tried to remake the Love the Way You Lie Part 2 Instrumental.  I wanted to be able to show you guys how I did it and how you can do it as well.  The only part that I’m really not happy with is the guitar.  I normally would get a guitarist to come in and replay it but I wanted to get this up as soon as possible.

What’s up BeatMatters readers?  Welcome to the first (of hopefully many) beat-making videos that I will be doing here on BeatMatters.  The video goes kind of fast, so I’ve summarized everything below.  Let me know what you think in the comments below–that means if you want more, tell me!

Plugins Used

	$479: Omnisphere is one of the best plugins out there with probably the most creative sounds. If you want to add some texture to really take your beats to the next level, this is a must.
	$698: This effects pack is pricey but it’s definitely indispensable. I haven’t heard any other limiter make drums knock as hard as the L2. Throw that on your drums bus and then again on the entire mix to really boost your volume and make everything stick together.
	Most of the drums used are available in our free drum samples section.

Mixing

Kick

• Boost around 1500 Hz to add presence
• Boost around 120 Hz to add punch
• Cut below 50 Hz to reduce rumble
• Layer with a high hat to add texture and high end
• Don’t be afraid to use a couple different kicks

Clap

• Cut some high end to make it less sharp
• add around 250-300 Hz to give it body

Widen your Instruments

• Use stereo imager to send some frequencies to the Left Channel and others to the Right
• Use a sample delay to delay the Left or Right channel by a few milliseconds

Cut out High End

• Reserve high end for instruments that you add in the hook
• Cut out high end in all instruments where it’s not necessary

I recently got a chance to play around with a Maschine from Native Instruments–and I was impressed!  As a keyboard player, I’ve never really been much of a drum pad/MPC kind of producer.  But I’ve been getting more into sampling recently and this thing is making me seriously reconsider my process.  It’s also getting some serious usage by the big guns.  This is a video with producer Needlz talking about how he’s ditched his MPC and a lot of his analog gear in favor of Maschine.

Bridging Hardware and Software

When you open the box, you’ll find not only your new Maschine controller but also some accompanying software and now over 6 GB of sounds from the Native Instruments library.  And if you don’t know about Native Instruments, I’d say they have some of the best sounds on the market.  You can read more about this in my Komplete 6 Review

Sampling with Maschine

It’s almost too easy to sample with this piece of gear.  Maschine allows you to load up a sample, then go through and find your chop spots and test them without chopping first.  Then if you need to nudge your chop a little bit, this is easy to do as well.  It also features destructive audio editing which means no more loading your chops into an external sample editor and then loading them back into your drum machine.  It can all be done inside the box.  You can:

• Truncate
• Fade in and out
• Normalize
• Reverse
• Cut, Copy, and Paste

Bottom Line

Great included sounds, better functionality than MPCs, and easy of use make Maschine a must-have for anybody that interested in sampling.
